International Literacy Day, designated by UNESCO in 1967, is an annual awareness day which marks the importance of of literacy to all countries and cultures. It takes place annually on the 8th September every year.
This year, International Literacy Day is being celebrated under the theme “Literacy for a human-centred recovery: Narrowing the digital divide”.
The virus crisis has disrupted the learning of children, young people and adults at an unprecedented scale. It has also magnified the pre-existing inequalities in access to meaningful literacy learning opportunities, disproportionally affecting 773 million non-literate young people and adults.
Youth and adult literacy #adultlitetacy were absent in many initial national response plans, while numerous literacy programs have been forced to halt.
While the pandemic has accelerated digital platforms for learning, earning and connecting, some 2.2 billion people below the age of 25 still do not have internet access at home.
People in developing countries are more likely to be cut off. The less privileged are at high risk of being neglected.
